Foodies on a diet

Dream about their next meal. We debate what we will fix. Every calorie counts.

We love our wedges. Ever since I looked at the label for the blue cheese dressing I was buying in the grocery store and noted that the first ingredient was soybean oil, we have been making our own. This time, we used a modified version of the “reduced” fat recipe from Joy of Cooking.

The following ingredients were blended in the Cuisinart: 1/4 cup olive oil mayo, 3/4 cup buttermilk, a heaping 1/4 cup blue cheese, a couple shakes of Penzey’s Creamy Peppercorn Dressing Base, and fresh ground pepper. Delicious!

Never thought I would say this, but I am bored with coffee. In a phase, I guess. So, I have been whipping up homemade mochas this weekend. The hot cocoa consists of 2 cups 1% organic milk, 1 heaping tablespoon Penzey’s High Fat Dutch Process Cocoa, 1.5 tablespoons sugar, a dash of vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Fill the mug 1/2 way with hot cocoa, the other 1/2 way with coffee, and top with homemade whipped cream. Decadent (but less so than half the beverages on the Starbucks menu) and affordable (also unlike most items on the Starbucks menu)! Cheers!

Cleared my mind.

Thankful.

A good day…and yet not such a good day

Happy to be off (work). Time for a nap. Exhausted. Pinterest mixed with statistics review.  Leftover yummy lunch with my parents. Clean pups.

Disbelief. Sadness. Indirect…yet direct like a sucker punch to the gut. Pinch me…this can’t be happening. Take a deep breath…

Hoping for the best.

Alpine Villages

Love this song. Picked up on it from Cherry Blossom. Prefer the version performed in the bathroom, but love both versions.

Dinner with our good friend Jill

Obsessed with R-E-A-L food at the moment. Thus, I went a wee bit crazy with new recipes. We had white bean tuscan soup from Giada, empanadas with a mushroom/fontina filling inspired by PLENTY and pinterest, and mixed greens with a lemon juice/olive oil vinaigrette from Barefoot Contessa’s HOW EASY IS THAT?

San Francisco (again!!!)

Needed a getaway from the fog and freezing cold. Great room at the Hyatt on Embarcadero for the right price (thanks to a winning bid on Priceline). Plus, the VW gets about 40 miles per gallon!

Made it in time on Saturday for breakfast at the Farmers’ Market. Took the N-Judah to Golden Gate Park. Beautiful day for exploring. Stopped in at the Strybing Arboretum, an old favorite.

On Sunday, started the morning off with the best cappuccino ever from Blue Bottle Coffee. Major perk…no line…and no crazy-long wait.

We hopped back on the N-Judah and headed to Duboce Park. We watched some very happy dogs playing in the dedicated off-leash area. We walked the streets in the vicinity and fantasized about living in one of the charming houses.

From there, we walked down to the Mission. I forced Rob to stop at Mission Dolores, mostly so I could see the adobe structure and the courtyard cemetery. We sat and read our Kindles in the sun at Dolores Park.

We then sat and read our Kindles in the sun at Dolores Park. We had to work up an appetite for our next meal.

Last, but not least, we had a delicious lunch at Pizzeria Delfina! Fantastic people-watching. Busy place. Perfect crust. M-m good.

Simple Favorite

Recipe for a simple and delicious meal:
Mushrooms, red onion, garlic, tomatoes…whatever is available (and appealing).
Toss with olive oil, Penzey’s Sandwich Sprinkle, and red pepper flakes (also from Penzey’s)
Roast
Serve with pasta or toasted country bread…and top off with some shaved parmesan and fresh basil (if available).

Tonight, we only had mushrooms, red onion, and garlic handy. Bon Appetit!

(photo: imagine it! technical difficulties…as usual!)

M-mmmm GOOD.

No Recipe

Just what was available in the kitchen and I have not been grocery shopping recently.

Roasted up some tomatoes, garlic, and onion. Added to pasta with some vegetable broth. Tossed in some spinach. Added some taleggio and red pepper flakes. Topped with a little parmesan. Delicious!

Looking forward to “lunch” at work tonight!

Blogland

Frustrated with computers and technology at the moment…

Lately, my internet connection speed cycles between slower than dial-up to acceptable. There was a post started…and then it was gone. Probably better that way. Wordy. Boring.

Went down the rabbit hole last night…and I am still there thanks to beautiful blogs (on food, of course) like Sprouted Kitchen, Honest Fare, Coconut and Quinoa, Sunday Suppers, Not Without Salt, A Thought for Food, Give Me Flour, Fresh365, and Roost.

(picture credit: cabbage slaw from Thought for Food, roasted eggplant pizza from Sprouted Kitchen, brussel sprouts with white beans and pecorino from Not Without Salt, empanada from Honest Fare, and late summer sandwich from Sunday Suppers)

Thoroughly enjoyed this video of David Lebovitz shopping in the Paris markets…and the resulting meal made my mouth water. If I ever get back to Paris in this lifetime, I must tackle this list.

A la mode has some fantastic photo journals on San Francisco. It confirmed what I already knew. I am a fool. Why haven’t I made the journey to Pizzeria Delfina? I have no excuses…and many regrets. Next visit, I think we will need to queue up for Flour and Water.

Signing out. Possibly for the next week. Must return to the world of long night shifts, punctuated by sleep, the daily dog walk, and Visalus shakes.

P.S. I don’t recommend adding spinach to a chocolate almond milk Visalus shake…unless you want to skip your meal altogether. :-)

Spotted out back

As I was dismantling the crispy Christmas tree, I spotted a large bird “falling” off the backyard wall into a Texas Ranger. When this happened, all the small birds in the vicinity scattered. My first thought was that the falling bird was a crow or a blue jay. Wrong! It was this beauty. Not a hawk…so what is it? I am clueless.
