Everything Pretzel Crisps

Super yum! I love bagels with everything on them, but they have too many carbs and calories for my current level of activity. This snack makes up for it! Another bonus, the sodium content is not terrible.

Heirloom tomatoes from seed, attempt #1 – FAIL

Even though I have a brown thumb, I decided to give heirloom tomatoes from seed a go. Initially, there was great success. Now, I am left with just a few plants that likely won’t make it.

Challenges faced:
1) Started the whole process too late – the first week of March. My plants are puny compared to those available for purchase at the big box stores.
2) Planted the seeds to shallow. My eye for a 1/4 of an inch and the 1/4 of an inch on a ruler differ significantly.
3) Hail – three separate occurrences. Transplanted the tomato plants a week too early and lost that gamble not once but three times!
4) Dogs. They seem to think that the garden box (my sweet dad made for me) is their personal sunbathing bed.

There are approximately six puny-looking plants left. I am sad. I was so looking forward to heirloom tomatoes from the garden. Better luck (and skill) next year. I may give in and go to the big box store for some tomato plants again this year. (Photo below from Sunset.com, taken by Ted Stefanski)

Snow – Kids – Fun

This weekend, I was lucky enough to go to a rustic family cabin by snowmobile with my brother and his three kids. After the recent week of weather and all the fresh snow, we had to park the vehicle early and jump on the snowmobiles. The trip in was a cinch until we got to the subdivision turn-off where the snow was sooo fluffy and the route required more technical skills. The snowmobiles I grew up on are so different than the crotch rockets they make today. I made it in without getting stuck…which is amazing!!!

We kept the food simple, so I won’t be sharing any pics of the meals we consumed. I learned that all three kids prefer beans over everything else. They don’t even care for toasted cheese sandwiches. I also learned that you can heat beans in the can while they rest on the wood stove. Simplify. Fewer dishes. Less clean-up.

I feel lucky to have spent that time with my brother and his three kids, surrounded by snow, and without the distractions of everyday life. I will treasure that experience forever and I hope that there are more in the future.

Note to Self

Chuck Close’s note to self (it is worth suffering through the 30 sec of advertisement and the intro by CBS…so worth it):

Spoke to me:
- Never let anyone define what you are capable of by defining parameters that don’t apply to you.
- Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of just get to work.
- Every great idea I ever had grew out of work itself.

P.S. I get to go to the mountains and stay in a very rustic cabin with my brother and his three kiddos this weekend. Getting there will require snowmobiles. How lucky am I?…very lucky. Pics to follow!

Silver and Light

Rob shared this with me. Pretty fantastic. Watch this and watch it to the end. Not to spoil it, but the intro is not about making meth. Promise.

Might have to talk to Pop-op about a taco truck…

Sodium Girl

Love this blog. Check out her “About Me” section. She is a super hero!

All I have time to do at this point is share a link. Gotta catch some zzzzz before heading back to work.

Deep in thought…spinning actually.

Recently, I started following katedaviesdesigns.com (aka Needled). Today, I realized that this young woman (of great knitting talent) had a stroke 26 months ago at the age of 36. Her description of the event…speaks volumes to me. It left me speechless and took my mind off other issues “on deck.”

My update on my blood pressure is that it is much better. The Bystolic did NOT…I repeat…did NOT…help my Raynaud’s. At my recent check-up, the bp was approx 115/65. So, now I am off blood pressure medication and monitoring daily. Anyway, uncontrolled blood pressure is the silent killer…with stroke being a potential outcome at the pressures I was running. Thus, I will be monitoring regularly.

Love my canine units. Funny how they can sense when I am sad. They huddle and cuddle and give me cute faces…oh, how I love my canine units.

Reminds me of Audrey Tautou in Amelie…

This made me smile today. Love the simplicity and make-do-with-what-you-have approach. No sprawling granite counters, stainless steel appliances, double-decker ovens. Rachel Khoo is tres mignon.

Evernote and FOOD

Trying to learn how to effectively utilize everything Evernote has to offer…and simplify life. Somehow, I doubt it will simplify life as much as I hoped it would. Oh, well. Delusional expectations?

Anyway, on this Evernote educational journey, I learned some practical things about cooking and found two recipes to add to my “to make” list of recipes. Here ya go…

JUDO

Stumbled on this on google news today. Familiar and yet foreign.

Instead of Sensei Yoshihiro Uchida (hopefully the New York Times won’t give you trouble), I was fortunate to study under Sensei Imoto and “Isabel” at the YMCA in Visalia, CA. (Super stars go by their first name in my book…Isabel and Claudia…inside story…don’t need a last name, kind-of like Prince).

NEVER did I look like a future Olympic competitor…NO!!! I was the warm-up for the future Olympic competitor(s). Nevertheless, I gained sooooo much from my experience. No regrets, except for losing touch and not staying active in judo.

Many thank you’s to my dedicated mother. She took me to so many judo tournaments and practices in nowhere places…and witnessed other female judokas leaving the mat on a stretcher.

Perhaps I would have been better off not obtaining a black belt…I may not have worried about someone making an example of me. Oh, well. I definitely was more confident and sure of myself in the end…thanks to judo. I look forward to following Marti Malloy in the upcoming Olympics. YOU GO GIRL!
