Unfortunately, I did not get to spend the whole day with Rob, but we did get to put in 10 miles this morning…mostly together. Rob turned on his after-burners at about mile 7. He was just a flash of light (from his head lamp) after that.
I am a nut without a plan. I decided to start on the backyard (a vast wasteland of dirt and doggy land mines). We can’t afford to call in a landscape architect, have someone hard and soft scape the place…so we are taking it one step at a time on our own. For Christmas last year, my brother gave us several oak trees and a ceanothus. Rob and I planted the oak trees, two gingkos, plus six to eight Texas Rangers in the backyard this Spring. This may not seem like much…but it was huge for us. None of the aforementioned have croaked…yet…and this is also huge for us. I have tried to knock off the gingkos by over watering them. We do not have green thumbs, do we Rob?
Anyway, today I planted seven(!!!) one gallon creeping figs. We hope that one day (real soon) they will choke out the concrete block wall behind the house. I loved it when I purchased the creeping figs and the owner of the nursery asked me about our watering system. My response: I take care of it by hand. He quickly warned me that we will need a real watering system (i.e. sprinklers, dripper hose, etc) come next Spring or we will lose it all. Hey, I know…I am not doing this in the proper order…but I did not want to wait until we had been living here 10 years to put in a backyard.
Between the pick axe, shovel, gallons of sweat lost, and the pink raw palms I now have…I think I am going to feel like $#&! tomorrow. Maybe I will have to call in? Joke.
Sorry if I carried on…I had a little cabernet before dinner…
